UPDATED May 8 – see below for more details!
Hans was surrendered to the Hillside SPCA yesterday because his owners could not afford treatment for his badly broken leg. He cannot use the leg at all, and on arrival he appeared to be in a lot of pain. We immediately took off the makeshift bandage he had been wearing and took him to a veterinarian we work with. The x-rays confirmed what we feared: his leg is badly shattered. Poor Hans. He is the sweetest, gentlest boy. He is an older guy but has a puppy look to his face. Hans’ leg could possibly be saved thru extensive and very, very expensive orthopedic surgery ($5-7,000), or it can be amputated and he will have an easier recovery. We have chosen the amputation route since he is an older guy and he is already not using the leg.
Hans’ surgery will be covered by Joe’s Fund, our special veterinary fund that pays all of the medical bills for shelter animals at Hillside. Hans is the latest to benefit from this vital fund, which has been hit very hard in recent weeks with multiple animals coming to us in need of extensive, and expensive, veterinary care. If you would, please consider a donation to Joe’s Fund to help us keep helping animals like Hans — he and the staff sure would appreciate anything you could spare! We know he would say thank you if he could, so from the bottom of our hearts, thank YOU, from us, and HANS!!
UPDATE!! May 8, 2015
Here is our handsome man Hans coming home from his vet stay. As you can see from the pictures he certainly went through a big ordeal. He has a long road ahead of him to recovery, but he’s a tough little guy. Hans & the entire staff at Hillside SPCA want to thank everyone out there for sharing his story & donating toward his surgery. We are asking everyone to continue sharing his updates & wish for anyone to continue sending donations as I’m sure you all are aware of the expense. Its people like you out there that make us able to get these precious babies the vet care they need. We will continue keeping everyone updated on Hans & again, thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. Anyone interested in donating toward his surgery is encouraged to do so! Make sure to choose “Joe’s Fund” when giving. Hans & all our babies send tons of smooches!!!
