I've adopted a senior dog from your agency not too long ago, named Lucky. He is a Bichon Frise and he is the best dog I have ever had! Some people thought I was crazy adopting a 9 year old dog, but I didn't care. We took him right to the vet after adopting him, got him a full workup including all senior blood work and everything turned out great. The worst thing was that he had to have a dental cleaning and a tooth pulled, but since then, he is doing GREAT! He is so obedient, doesn't even need a leash because he walks right by my side and stops immediately when I stop. If you are reading this and wondering if its worth adopting a senior dog.go for it! Even if they only survive for a few years, it's better to spend those retired years in a home full of love! I am so glad the SPCA is able to keep its doors open, even though there is overcrowding.at least the animals have a chance to survive and have a chance to get that forever owner!

Two weeks ago tomorrow I adopted a wonderful cat, Persimmins. He is affectionate and has a marvelous appetite. He likes chicken along with his fancy feast. He just fits in as if he has been there all along. Thank you Hillside for Persimmins

On August 2 we adopted Chief a 4 month old brindle Staffordshire Terrier. He has been an absolutely wonderful addition to our family. He already walks on a leash beautifully and is extremely well mannered around everyone he meets. We have got nothing but complements on this guy since we brought him home. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this dog. We have found a true companion in Chief.

I adopted my Teddy from your shelter in June 1992. Sadly, he crossed the Rainbow Bridge on July 28, 2008. He was 15 years 8 months and the best dog anybody could ask for. When we are ready for another dog, we will definitely be coming back to Hillside!

I just wanted to update everyone on Dakota(Hardy) and Rowdy. Dakota is doing well. He still hates thunderstorms but he is the biggest most loveable dog. He still loves his treats and would eat them all day if he could. Rowdy, well where do we begin, you named him well. I got him as a present for my boyfriend but he is all mine. He loves to play and has more toys than my children had growing up. It looks like a child when thru the house when he is done playing! Both dogs have brought such joy to our home I don't know what we would do without them. Thank you to everyone that took care of them for us before they came home.

It's been two years since my son and I adopted Jake (boxer/pit bull mix) from your shelter and not a day goes by that we don't thank God for his presence in our lives. He is the sweetest, most loyal and loving creature I've ever known and I don't know what we would do without him! Thank you Hillside, for providing a safe haven for these animals and for all the good work you do! We plan on adopting again in the future! God Bless You.

I adopted Valentino on June 8, 2008. He is the most wonderful dog. He adapted right away. We are working on improving the 11th commandment in our household: "thou shalt not chase cats." He is always contrite but they are bouncing about so I do understand. Valentino is a perfect gentleman. He is wonderful with people, dogs, children. He is housebroken. As I write this in my office he is napping by my side (he's always by my side). He goes to the Museum park daily and just walks past joggers, bikers, walkers, etc. I just love this dog and so do my vets and friends. Thank you, Hillside, for all of the wonderful work you do.

We adopted Parker (lab mix) and she is beyond wonderful. We have 2 toddlers and another rescue dog. And Parker has really become an outstanding member of our family. She has only been with us for 2 weeks and is already an important member of our family. We were leery of adopting a 5 1/2 year old, large dog mainly because of our toddlers. We had our problems in the first week because she was scared. But now, no problem. I encourage everyone to adopt a shelter dog because the bound they form with your family is unbreakable. I cannot image our family without Parker. And to think that someone would give her up boggles our minds. I just want to thank the Hillside SPCA for being so flexible with Parker's situation.

We just adopted Butterball (a bassett & doxie mix) this past Saturday. He is the sweetest puppy! He is so well-behaved; no accidents or chewing and he gets along well with our 2 cats. I can't believe someone gave him up! We are so happy we found him. He's already getting spoiled.

Hello folks and fans of Hillside SPCA! Time to update the story of Marzipan, the little black/white beagle mix we adopted from Hillside over 8 years ago! She is quite the modern lady, with her own page at Dogphoria! She still loves her dad the best, but is willing to put up with mom if she has to! We adopted a beagle boy about 1-1/2 years ago through BREW beagle rescue named Harlequin. AND we have been fostering beagle boys for the same group for about 4 years now so there is always a playmate nearby, or somedoggy to boss around!!! Sadly, our dear Taffy, the terrier mix, passed away last week at the age of 17-1/2~ the stories she must be barking at the Rainbow Bridge!! Thanks, again, Hillside, for all the wonderful work that you do, and for allowing this complicated little lump of sweetness we call Marzie into our lives!

I adopted Chip on May 27, 2008. He is a 5yr. old beagle, who is a big sweetheart. He loves his new home and is very happy. I took him over to my sister's house, where he met her sheltie and they got along great! When he sleeps, he snores. It is soo cute! Soon he will meet my other sister's 3 dogs. She has 2 mini dachshunds and a pug/boxer mix! Chip is a great dog, I couldn't ask for a better dog! He is loved and is very happy! Thanks for a wonderful dog!

We adopted Fresco on Nov. 19, 2007. He is a very special dog who has become my best friend. I'm not sure how we ever lived without a dog in our house. It would seem so empty if he wasn't there. He loves going for walks, car rides, and visiting with his Nanny and Pop Pop who have two golden retrievers. Ginger is older, but Nutmeg is only 1 year old and she and Fresco love to run and play together. God bless you for all you do and I pray that you will be able to stay open. P. S. Fresco would like to say thank you to all of the volunteers and workers at the shelter for taking such good care of him after he was brought there.

I hope my donation can help prevent the shelter from closing. I adopted two amazing kittens from Hillside a little over a year ago (Sal and Sally now known as Kate & Sawyer). They have become the most lovable, playful cats with just amazing personalities. I call them my little dogs because they greet me at the door when I come home and also come running when I call their names. I can't imagine life without them. I am so thankful that Hillside rescued them and I hope they can continue to save animals and adopt them out so they can bring joy into the hearts of their new owners everyday- just like Kate and Sawyer do for me! Thank you Hillside SPCA and I will keep you in my prayers!!

I just read the Republican/Herald article about the dire straits of this shelter. I grew up in Pottsville and I know this is a clean, well-run facility. The animals need us. Please, please try to donate even a little $ to save the pets!!! (In case you're wondering, yes, I donated!)

I hope my donation and the donations of others help to keep this shelter going. We adopted a dog from a collie rescue last year that was originally dropped off at Hillside. Her name is now Mocha and she is our family's best friend!

Thanks for all that you do for the animals. I love the fact that you are a no kill shelter. That's the way they all should be. I have been trying to help out with your current troubles. Please let everyone know ASAP if you'll be able to stay open.
