There are many SPCAs in Canada also. In fact, I am on a committee that is trying to raise funds to build a new shelter in the area where I live. Your website is helpful and full of ideas. Glad to see there are others with the same goals!

Just wanted to say you have a great site. I adopted a abused husky from a shelter and he is the greatest. It has taken alot of love and training, but he is the best.Only thing missing is a brother for him, which we will be looking soon. I will visit soon with my boy and he will be a special needs dog.I only wish more people look to the shelters because you find the best friends there. keep up the great work. Joni & Konyak.

Hello everyone at the SPCA. We adopted Clara about a year ago. I probably spent a few hours playing with all the cats that day, unable to make a decision about which one I was going to take home with me. As soon as Clara popped her head up I knew instantly that she was my new cat. Her white cheeks just looked so cute on her black face, how could I resist. She's still as cute as ever and has some personality! Her only downfall seems to be her love for stinky shoes.

a relative of mine worked at the shelter about 15 yrs. ago. at that time it was just starting to renovate and had no room for a lot of dogs that were picked up. so i took them in,in hopes of finding homes for them.at one time i had over 36 dogs, and ,over the years had found good homes for a few, for the ones i could not find homes for i kept.i am happy to say they all lived long and happy lives, most reached the ripe old ages of 12-14 yrs. none died young. i still have 2 that are now at 14 yrs. they as most, were pups or 1 yr. old at the time that i got them. some a few years older.with all of these dogs, with all of the different mixtures of breeds that i had, i had NOT ONE that i had a problem with. my point,i never regretted taking anyone of them .all they wanted was to get love and be loved.and they gave me their love in more ways that i could say.yrs. ago i bred pure-bred dogs and i can say now that there is no difference between the two when it comes to loyalty, love and friendship.

This is a wonderful thing you're doing. I am so sorry for Luigi--he seems like such a sweet kitty. I always wish I lived in a mansion so I could open my arms as wide as possible & take in all the needy critters! My 3 cats & 2 dogs fill up our 2 bedroom 900 square foot house already, unfortunately! :(

Approximately 5 years ago we had lost our 14 yr old dog to old age. We went to hillside and a black and white part border collie kept following my son. I didn't want a long haired dog again but it was meant to be. At first she was aggressive with us, and afraid of everything, even the ceiling fan and stairs. With patience and lots of love, she is part of us now. She had run away the first night and with her not knowing the neighborhood and ice on the road I gave up looking for her. There she was on our back porch, I have no idea how she found it. She even knows our cars a block away from the house. She is excited when a scent of my children is in the house such as from an envelope arriving in the mail. When she first came here she was urinating through the house but being a nurses aide I recognized an infection. Fortunately the medications worked. She has come a long way, the kids tease me how needy she is. I, too, suffered from post traumatic stress disorder in the past so "Yanni" and i have that bond between us. I do warn people not to allow their children to be poking at her when I walk her, she does still tend to bite when she perceives she is in danger. She is our baby and we love her. Being a herd dog by nature, we have 4 cats she keeps in line, pounces on them if they scratch. She's a keeper!

In 1993, after we lost our Airedale Sandy, we came to the Hillside SPCA hoping to find and adopt a dog. My daughter fell in love with a 12 week old terrier mix named Toto. We adopted her that day, and she is the best dog we have had yet! She gives back tenfold all the love she has been given, is loyal, eager to please, and to look at her , we just have to smile. She is a vital part of our family, and is the greatest friend and companion we could have. We are so thankful for the SPCA and for our Toto, who brings so much joy and love to us on a daily basis. Now that our children are grown, Toto and I have become even closer, and needless to say, she has become more spoiled than ever. We are so thankful for this precious animal!

Hello! I just read some of the amazing stories about the animals on this page. They touched my heart so deeply. If it weren't for the 2 dogs that I have now, I would love to adopt as many of the animals that I could! I volunteer about 2 or 3 times a week at the Hillside SPCA and I think that everyone does a great job of loving and caring for those animals. Keep up the great work!

I just spent 3 hours surfing the contents of your site. My heart goes out to the animals that are patiently waiting. If it wasn't for my lack of money and the distance problem, I would happily adopt one. I miss my 2 dogs that I lost after recently leaving my husband. I really feel the love and care as I read through this site. Keep up the good work.

I lost my beloved cat "Kitty" to cancer on April 27,2000. He found me almost 10 years ago, and I loved him from the first moment I saw him. He was by my side when I married, got a dog from your shelter, and added 2 children to our family. I was by his side when we had him euthanized, and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. When I visited your shelter, and saw "Mr. Max", I fell in love again. We adopted him, and a 9 week old kitten named "Pebbles" (my daughter renamed her "Marshmallow"). Both kitties are pure joy, and they are doing very well. Thank you to all of you at Hillside for caring about animals enough to afford them a second chance. You make a difference in every life you touch.

i voulenter at the spca in my spare time and all of those dogs are wounderful, loving animals. for the few months i've being helping out there i have had my favorites each taken away from me but one, sabrina. i'm hoping she gets a good home because she deserves it. i hope all the other dogs do too, but i hope if they do get adopted they don't get brought back because they all deserve a good home and a good family unlike the ones they had before who abused them. aspin another dog there has beeen adopted 2 or 3 times and brought back i just wanna say to all the people who work there, that you have all done a wounderful job of taking care of all those dogs. i will always miss bandit, frankie, and thunder

After losing my dog to a sudden illness just before Christmas, our entire family was shaken. Sparky was almost 15 and had been adopted from a shelter in Dayton, OH. We were a military family and had moved with Sparky 5 times! When the time was right to look for another dog, my husband and I headed to Hillside. There we found the most adorable black and white beagle/ springer spaniel puppy. We fell in love immediately! I don't know her shelter name (her littermate was "Rocky") but she is Marzipan to us. She has been a handful at times, but is always sweet-natured and loving. We have started puppy kindergarten and I must say she is at the top of the class. Marz is very smart and loves to learn! Thank you so much to the staff of Hillside and the volunteers, too. You were so helpful. Everyone who sees Marz (and she has lots of fans) asks where we got her and I am happy to recommend Hillside SPCA. Thanks!

Hi,I used to volunteer at a shelter in surrey,B.C. before I moved to Labrador,Newfoundland. There are no shelters here and the people don't have alot of respect for animals. They still go on seal hunts here. Now they only sell the pelts and give some of the meat to the older people of the comunity. The rest of the seal is left to rot. My inlaws were very happy to have been givin some meat from the last hunt. There is a dog that lives outside by my house that was left out in -40 and -50 degree weather. When I try to talk to these people they tell me that dogs have always been left outside like that and I don't know what I'm talking about. I have decided to try and start a shelter here.I don't know how well I'll do, because there is no S.P.C.A. here and we are completly isolated. I have already started building cages. If anyone has any suggestions please email me at terry_buckle@yahoo.com

Volenteering at the SPCA every weekend has been fun yet eye opening. Due to the problem w/ abandoned animals, it's sad how many there are. But it's always rewarding to see the animals that get adopted go to a good home. I've had many favorite dogs there and am glad to see them getting adopted. Bandit, you were the best dog I've ever known in my entire 16 yrs, I'm gonna miss you buddy. Love you always!!!

I must admit, coming and helping out at the spca every weekend has made me open my eyes more to the world around me. I can't understand still how people can throw their animals out of cars and leave them. Just working at the spca, I have become attached to several dogs. (Timber, Rastus, Ruby, and last but not least, my fall angel, Bandit) If people would only think about what they are doing to these animals be bringing them to you. You give them shelter and food, yes, but how can you give them all the love and attention they need? Today, it seems to me that more people are concerned with how much they pay for a pure-bred animal, then how much good they have done but adopting a stray. In my mind, the dog you adopt will love you more in the long run. See you this weekend. Never forget my favorite buddy, Bandit. I'll miss him forever, but he gives me a reason to help other animals.

I recently had a Beagle for 16 years and had to put her to sleep. It was the absolutely hardest thing for me to do. On April 1, 2000 my two grandsons and I went to Hillside where we found our dream come true (Skittles). We have renamed her Stella and she is such a joy in our lives. I cannot imagine our life without her. I dont know how she came to be at Hillside but for whatever reason I believe she was put there for us to Love. She has a wonderful new home and I am hoping to have her for a long long time. Thank You for Stella, a/k/a Skittles.

This shelter proves that animals do not have to be euthanized just because they are feral or that there "simply isn't enough space". I was hired recently at an SPCA and quit after my first day because of the horror I witnessed. What I saw was not "humane" at all, and the only reason for the euthanasias performed was that the cats were "feral". They were only called feral because they had been caught in traps. These cats could have been yours or your neighbors cat. Of course, the animals were scared shitless--the only way they were handled was with one of those long "pole chokers". I tell you, of all the cats I've ever had, every single one could have been one of those cats. If it were you being treated this way, wouldn't you be pissed off??? And thats how these animals die. They are pulled out of there cages by a pole choker, kicking and screaming, like anyone would who is dragged out by their neck. They are pinned down, in any position they land in, and put to sleep. Tell me if that animals last minutes aren't spent in utter misery. And they say there is no alternative. Well, so far, I have learned there are plenty of alternatives---your shelter included!!! In the meantime, something needs to be changed about these other shelters. This, for me, was of course an emotionally traumatic experience that will haunt me for awhile, but deeper still, it is an ethical problem. It reveals that there is no respect for an animals last few minutes on this earth. It reveals that there is no respect for the dying process. It doesn't give "feral" cats an honest second chance. They are only assessed as being feral because of the "look" in their eyes and by their reclusive, and of course sometimes aggressive behavior (because their only means of being handled is via the aggressive method of the pole choker), and it becomes all that they know. This has to be stopped. If I were to have stayed in that place, it would have removed a piece of my humanity; I don't think that's what a "humane society" is all about. i sincerely congratulate you on your sincere efforts, despite the overcrowding. Despite all the difficulties you must encounter, you still have respect for these animals. You give them space to run around. You give them blankets at night. You kindly refer to them as "residents". I also commend you on your efforts to educate the public. Through your example, there is hope presented for these animals. May God bless you--there must certainly be a star in your crown.

My daughter and I came to the shelter in Sept.1999 looking for a puppy. My daughter fell in love with Sasha the moment she saw her. She's part lab/collie. Sasha had a sister and her mother there too. We don't know how anyone could possibly give them up, they were all so sweet. We brought Sasha home and she is doing terriffic with our older dog, Alf, and our 2 cats, Smokee and Lumpee (Also strays) She turned into the most beautiful dog, more collie than lab. She is getting obediance training now because she is over-lovable. She is so happy and loves everyone and everything. Just want to let you know that Sasha is doing gggrrreeeaaattt. We love her to pieces.

Been looking at the special needs animals and want to encourage everyone to consider adopting a special needs animal. I know of someone who needed to turn in their dog and was afraid it was too old to be adopted. She took it to Hillside SPCA because she knew that they give all the animals that come through a chance to be adopted, even if they're old. If they can't get a home, they get to live at the shelter instead of beig put to sleep. I've seen a lot of elderly dogs there and when I visit and ask where they are, I find out they've been adopted!!! Ultra cool!!!! Thanks Hillside!

Just wanted to say "GOOD JOB" to the Hillside SPCA for all the work they do. I want to encourage everybody to help support the Hillside. Like someone else said in a post here, they don't get money from the state or government to run. They exist only on what they get as donations and what they earn at fund-raisers. I was horrified to be at a volunteer meeting a few weeks ago and see and hear the director of the Ruth Steinert SPCA stand up and say that they don't get any public funding when they actually get something like 75% of the fees collected by Schuylkill County on the sale of dog licenses. That's an awful lot of money for getting "nothing" from the state. I've been to the two shelters and they speak for themselves. Hillside SPCA is my shelter of choice... for a lot of reasons...

My daughter and I visited the spca on Feb.11, 2000 looking to adopt a kitten. There were so many to choose from in the shelter. My daughter decided on Moe, a 6 month old striped tiger, which we named Brody. Our dog, Keisha, wasn't quite sure what to think of this at first, but they are becoming the best of friends. Brody likes to get Keisha's tail. Thank You to Lisa who was very helpful to us while we were there. Brody is a blessing to our family. I hope more people will consider adopting from the shelter, there are so many good animals in need of a home..Please open your heart to them.

The Hillside shelter is very special all the dogs get to be left out to play and be with us for the whole day not like many shelters where they have to be locked up only sometimes to be left out for 15 minutes. I'm so glad their are people that donate to keep the shelter going. We get no money from the state. Thank You!!!

I adopted my Kitty Kat in October and I can't begin to tell you how much I love him. He & the dog have a ball together. He loves to walk over my keyboard when I'm downloading on the Web, especially when it's important. It's like "he knows." Mr. Kitty Kat is getting fat because he is spoiled. I can't help it. In 1990, I adopted a crippled poodle, that was surely going to be left behind. Smokey, (if you remember him)is doing fanatastic -- many years later he is still chasing the cat and chickens even being crippled. When we first brought him home he was so sad (severely abused by his previous owner) but with lots of love and time he has been the best pet. He has a country life with his own bed in the house and acres of running room. Thanks to hillside he got a second chance. Please don't ever stop saving the animals! Thank you.

Your daily mission has secured you a place in heaven! Too many people do not realize how special and precious each animal is. I am originally from Scranton, PA, but I found a no-kill shelter to volunteer at in my new town of Clarksville, TN. I found my precious Shelby there, and my life is so much brighter with her and her "brother" Max in it. Keep up the good work and God bless all of you. Hopefully we can set the example for more cities across the country and around the world.

Hi, i'm only 12 years old but i wanted to tell you I have always wanted a cat one of the special needs one.Like, maybe the one with only one eye he is cute.I did donated all my birthday money to you when i was 10. I cant wait till i am 14 so i cant volenteer there .When i was 10 i couldnt wait to be 12 because i thought that was the age.But now i turned 12 and i looked up to see how to be one and to my disapointment i saw you had to be 14. But when I am 14 I promise I will volenteer there .I once had a cat it was not really mine its owners didnt take care of it .So I did. It fuirst came to me when I was around 10.I fed it one night and from that day on it kept coming back.I loved him more then anything. But one day i found out he had worms . And I didn't have enough money to take him to the vet. Then he never came back.I LOVE HIM!!!

My husband wanted to get me a gift of two cats for Christmas when we first got married. We went to Hillside and Helen insisted we take a pair of kittens that had gone home with someone else but were returned. That was three years ago. Now,Leon keeps walking in front of my moniter as Lucy sits quitely ruling the house. Thank you for accepting the kittens back so that we could bring them home with us! Your web site just might inspire him to adopt another!

Wow - what a great website. I have volunteered at the Vancouver SPCA for over 3 years and myself and the other volunteers find it hard keeping 34 dogs happy, stimulated and exercised until they are adopted and you have over 100 dogs - great work!!! Fabulous website ideas and you have such valuable information for people who are interested in adopting a new pet. Great photos of the dogs and cats! Bye for now

Hi, my name is Jen and my mother Helen is the "cat room manager" otherwise known as Helen from the Hillside. I just wanted to leave a little note saying how very proud I am of my mother for how hard she works for those animals to give them all the love and care they need and to find them that extra special home!! My mother has one of the biggest hearts around when it comes to animals, there is nothing that she wouldn't do for an animal. We have gone on many expeditions to save a poor animal in need and I have enjoyed every minute of it because I know that it will make a difference in one animal's life. Everyone that works there should be commended for all their efforts!! I myself have 3dogs, two of which are shelter dogs, thanks to my lovely friend Barbara...Oh that poor little dog, she says to me, and I also have 1 cat also a shelter animal. I think this web site is great!!! All my little buddies down the shelter have become Celebrities!!! I hope that they all find a great home!! I also hope that you guys keep up the good work on the site and keep it going because I believe that it is making a difference in the shelter animal's lives!!! Good luck and God bless!!!!!

I was out there looking for a dog and Hillside SPCA is one of the cleanest, organized shelters I have visited in a very long time. The animals were clean, feed and well cared for and the volunteers out there were very helpful with providing information and allowing me to take the dogs I wanted out for a walk. I have been to a shelter in Minersville and I walked in and walked right back out. Hillside takes pride in their care for animals and it shows!!! Keep Up the excellent work out there. We all need to help by either volunteering or donating a bag of food, lets help Hillside running.

On the advice of a friend, I looked at your website for the first time. WOW! It's beautifully done, the photos are endearing, and you're chock-full of good information. If I were currently in the market for an animal or two, I would come to visit you. At present, our family is owned by an Australian cattle dog and two domestic short-haired cats. Word of mouth advertising is the most effective, but isn't there some additional way you can get the word out about your website? It's so good, and I'm sure it would motivate people to visit you when they're ready to adopt a furry friend. I like the Letters to the Editor that periodically appear in our Pottsville Republican. They help raise awareness, as do your articles about the necessity of neutering animals and providing adequate shelter and affection for them. Also keep up your gorgeous photos that appear too seldom in our paper. It would be good if they were in more frequently. Best of luck, and best wishes.

I have adopted 4 animals from Hillside and worked there for a short period of time. I must say the true devotion and love shown to the animals through the employees is unbelievable. Smokey (crippled poodle from 1990), has been enjoying his life to the fullest in the country. He is slower now but still loves every step he takes. All the animals I have brought home have been wonderful pets -- better than I could have imagined -- Thank You for saving the lives of my new family members! Looking forward to many more years of connection to Hillside! Keep up the good work!!!

I LOVE this site! It's the neatest! I have 1 dog named Kodi who is a Newfoundland and 3 cats, Black Cat was found in a shed in our backyard when we moved so we took her in, Crystal we rescued from a shelter after she was hit by a car and no one claimed her so we took her home with us alive, Tigger is our third cat and she is from a barn in NH which is where we got her from. Thank you soo much for establishing a shelter for animals that have no other place to go to and by giving them the warmth and love they need.

In the last 18 months we've adopted two beagles from Hillside. Those dogs quickly became a very important part of our family. The employees at Hillside did a superb job of matching the right dogs to our family. Unfortunately, our male beagle, Sam ran away from home 3 weeks ago. Our female beagle, Daisy is despondent. We'll probably be heading back to Hillside very soon for a companion for Daisy.
