Hillside SPCA Home Page

Our county Humane Society was officially opened one year ago this month. It has grown by leaps and bounds but still not to the point of Hillside. Just to let you know, we hope to be more like your shelter some day and give every animal as long as they need to be adopted. I hope to visit your shelter sometime in the near future. Keep up the great work for the love of the animals!

My sister just got a cat named Mason a couple weeks ago. Your spca is the best I saw so far. Since I'm too young to volunteer, I visit the spca a lot and play with the cats, I also help walk the dogs. Keep up with the good work!

As a child in this family, I know just how important the Hillside SPCA was to our pet needs. As of right now, my family is moving and we need to find homes for our 2 very precious and beautiful spayed female cats. We hate to see them go, but where we are moving pets aren't allowed. I wish I had enough money to take care of 50 cats, maybe someday I will but for now I just want to say Thank you to Hillside and one day things will be better. Thank you for all of your help in our pet purchases throughout the years. Some have passed on and have well-kept graves in our backyard, because our pets were as precious as we were are each other. Thanks again!!

Thank you so much for taking care of Sasha (fka Fluffy) and all of the other animals who have ended up at Hillside. I knew when I visited Hillside that it is a special place for the residents. Where else, except a shelter, would I find a gentle, loving, loyal dog who is already house-broken, beyond the chewing stage, and ever so happy to be a member of my family? Thank you!

I would like to compliment you on your fantastic web-site!!! Over the past few weeks my search for the perfect dog has led me to many pet adoption websites and I can say with confidence that yours was the BEST!!! It is easy to navigate with great pictures and info, and with great links on every dog topic imaginable!! I plan on visiting Hillside soon to find our new best friend.

Two years ago I adopted my big, beautiful, yellow Lab, Scooby Doo and just a few months ago my little, adorable American Eskimo,Maximus, from Hillside. The ladies working there were wonderful. You can see how much they love and care for the animals.

Great site. I spend hours here not only looking at the animals, but reading the information. Most shelter sites are lame or look like a kindergarten kid threw them together. The Hillside site deserves the awards it wins!

Althought the guestbook is no place to have "discussions", I feel I need to answer your last entry. First of all, I lost three messages, yours among them, when I did some updating to the site a few days ago. I cannot retrieve them and I apologize to those who had a post deleted. Secondly, you did not choose to leave your email address or any way to contact you either the first time or this time in order for a shelter employee or the manager to discuss your complaint about what you perceived to be an injustice in how the shelter handles returns. The shelter has many animals returned and it can be a frustrating experience. Each "returner" has their own reasons, some very valid, but many absolutely ridiculous. If the shelter does not "suggest a different animal" as you remarked they should, there is usually a very good reason for that. Since you chose not to disclose your reason for return the first time or this time, no one can comment on that in particular. I am telling everyone who has any problem with anything from the shelter that the guestbook is NOT the place to be posting these things. They need to be taken up with shelter personnel. There are always two sides to every story.

Wow...if you got offended by my entry, I can only imagine what other messages have been deleted! I love Hillside & the animals that reside there, BUT I still feel staff ought to be nicer and more understanding when someone must return an animal. Simply suggest another - don't deprive an animal of a home just because you may be feeling frustration! Thank you very much... =)

I couldn't find your webmaster's email address! So, hopefully you'll get this. I featured COALIE on my site to assist in her placement. I get about 200,000 visitors or more a year, many from Pennsylvania. A surfer requested I add your link to my rescue site, which I will do this weekend. I posted Coalie's picture promptly as many surfers visit my site Friday nights/Saturdays to see what group I am featuring. Let me know if this was okay? Nice site! Hugs from Houston, Cathie

I just wanted everyone to know that the cat we adopted from Hillside is the greatest cat. His name is Kenny, and Helen knew immediately he was the "purrfect" cat for us. Although he is still getting used to his new home, he's very lovable, purrs constantly, and loves to be held which is exactly what we wanted. Daisy, our 10 1/2 year old Golden Retriever isn't thrilled having to share the spotlight, but they are getting along and showing a little interest in each other. If we knew there were cats as laid back as Kenny, we probably wouldn't have waited this long to adopt one.

Just to add my 2 cents about the staff at the Hillside, I think they are absolutely wonderful. I've been reading kudos to the cat side folks, but don't forget about the "dog side". Everyone there care about placing animals in good homes. They aren't out to win popularity contests, they are there to save lives. Part of saving lives is making sure the animals go to good homes. Any shelter can have a high adoption rate, but what is their return rate? The Hillside's is very low compared to other shelters. In fact, many shelters won't even take an animal back after 72 hours. If it's not working out - tough. That means that those animals have to go to another shelter -- or worse -- get put to death. At the Hillside, they work hard screening adopters to help increase the odds that an animal and it's new adoptive owner will get along and the placement will work out. I admire that very much. Keep up the great work!

I went to look at the cats at hillside one day recently and wow what a cool place! I can't believe how many cats there are and how neat it is that they can run about and not be stuck in tiny cages all day. I was there on a tuesday and I'm so glad I chose hillside. I found my perfect cat match. (thanks Helen) and the ladies there are really nice people! It was busy at the time and they were running around like headless chickens but still made the time for me and several other people there for the same reason I was. I admire anyone who can do 50 things at one time and make it look easy. Thanks for the kindness ladies in the cat room at hillside.

I've been to the cat side of the shelter many times and I must say, Helen you are one super lady! No matter how busy you are you take the time to talk to me either in person or by phone to help me with any questions I may have about my cats I have adopted from you. The people are so different there, but I always get treated with kindness and respect from the staff of the cat side. Thank you so much!

I volunteer at Hillside every week, and I love it there. Every animal we get, no matter how unwanted and unloved it is, is wanted and loved the moment it walks through our doors. No animals are "put down" because of age or injury, unless it is so bad the animal can't even get up or eat. One dog has been there for 9 years! Luckily, she got adopted. Please consider adopting. We have over 90 dogs and 200 cats! Even if you can't adopt, maybe you could foster an animal? Or even donate something, such as blankets, food, laundry detergent(we are out of it now, we have to use hand soap), even a washer or dryer(that still works) would be wonderfully and greatly apprieciated! Maybe you might think about volunteering some of your time to help out with the dogs?

Everyone who signed the guest book recently probably got an email about two dogs named Wizzer and Daisy. Well I'm happy to report at least one of the dogs had good luck, Daisy is doing wonderful in her new home. Sadly, I can't say the same for Wizzer she has been adopted and brought back 4 times already w/it never being her fault. The last time it was because "she wasn't fun anymore" I hope someone soon will open their heart and home to this poor "back porch girl"

I lost my best friend, Marilyn, a beautiful long-haired Somali cat, on Monday. She died as the result of complications from diabetes. I adopted her at the no-kill shelter in Lancaster 8 years ago. She had a long, hard fight these last few months, but she endured each insulin injection and struggled valiantly until the end. I am completely and totally heartbroken, but I know that I am a better person for having loved her and for being loved by her. There is no better pet than a "shelter pet". I know that my home will not be "cat-less" for long. My "little girl" would want me to save another lost soul, so please e-mail me when you start to get litters of kittens again.

The cat on the front of today's Schuylkill Online is a Hillside cat. Maybelle is her name and she loves people and cheese and reading and coloring (honest). But, she is not for adoption. Not ever. Maybelle actually chose us about a year ago. Becky and I were taking our time with all the cats. (We really wanted them all) and Maybelle (whom the shelter staff had named Phantom) followed us and meowed and climbed me. "Becky," I said, "looks like she's picked us." Becky named her Maybelle after another of the Hillside cats whom we did not take home.

Hillside SPCA shelter and staff are tops! My daughter and I occasionally visit to spend time with the cats (we'd stay around the clock if we could) and I have adopted two cats from the shelter. Our most recent addition, Maybelle, picked us, actually. She's been with us almost a year now and we adore her. The staff are helpful and pleasant. In fact, I recently had a problem in my community and Helen Prohibition, God's right hand assistant to abused animals, came to the rescue. Thank you Hillside for taking care when so many rotten people have turned their backs. - - Christine

I'd just like to say thank you to the collie rescue for helping us find a wonderful permanent home for Foxy. Also I'd like to thank the siberian husky rescue for thier continuing help with any husky at all we get in. Also I would like someone to consider Girl or Tony for adoption they are the two most loyal dogs at the shelter and really need a good permanent home. They are really getting tired of the hassle of the shelter and just want and need a home of thier own. So please consider either of them if you are looking for a very loyal and faithful companion.

Visited the "Open House" today and I think you are all wonderful people. My heart melts when I see the love you have for all of God's little creatures. How someone can give up those angels is beyond me. Keep up the great work. I hope that your Open House was a success in that you placed some of our friends in loving homes. They sure do deserve a good life for they did not ask to be discarded by their previous owners. I could never give up the three girls that I adopted from Hillside. They are my pride and joy. Janet & I adopted "Johnny" from your shelter several years ago. We had picked out another dog we wanted and you talked us into adopting Johnny at no additional cost because of the closeness the two dogs had. We had to return the first pick because we could not control his escape escapades. We have Johnny to this day and could never give him up. He has found a buddy in "Hoble" a yellow lab whom we adopted thru the Pine Grove Pet Network. We were volunteers in that program for several years. We also adopted a St. Bernard "Pumpkin" from the Reading, PA shelter over 8 years ago. We would never "buy" a pet when so many shelter dogs are waiting for a good home. When looking at your web site and seeing "Annie & Lilly" the 2 dachunds, we wanted to immediately come up and adopt them but with 3 adopted dogs & 3 adopted cats, we just don't see how we could finance them. Please keep up the good work. George & Janet Jones

I volunteer and work at hillside and just wanted to say what a special place it is. Until i came there i never dreamed there would be such a wonderful place for all the unwanted animals to go to. The best part is once they are there they aren't unwanted any longer, each animal that comes through our doors is loved and cared for as if they were our own animals. They are left to run free and play with us and other dogs. This way we are able to see true personalities and it makes them better for adoptions where they aren't the only animal. If an animal is caged for an extensive amount of time(like living in a cage at most animal shelters) it is definitely not as sound as dogs that are able to have fun. We remember each and every animal that passes through our doors. We especially love and remember those dogs we have lost along the way some of my babies- Tiny, Thunder, and Wizard. I'll love you always!!!

GREETINGS HILLSIDE FANS AND FAMILY !! Just a quick note to say how wonderful I think all you people are and hope that my favorite buddy Wizzer finds a home soon. Wizzer was one of two back porch girls who spent many hot and cold days tied out on a back porch in rain, snow, sleet and heat! If it wasn't for the kindness of a nice policeman who visited their home and asked the owner to clean up the area and see the dogs were cared for, they would not have ended up at Hillside and so far one of them has gotten an new home with people who really care about them!! One more to go and I hope she gets a home, but it is sad to see how some people can find a puppy so enjoyable but then shelf them when they become older and require alittle more adult attention. Rather than clean up after the girls and see they got exercise and attention they were given back to Hillside but I can only say that I will feel very happy when the last one is in a good home with a careing and loving family. They deserve it! Love to you all and keep up the good work. Dee

Hi, Here's the site with Sasha and her family. She has her hair cut short for the summer and has gone through obedience training,so she has calmed down quite a bit. She still loves to play with the cats though. One cat, Smokee, is not pictured because he is camera shy.

I just wanted to say hi. As YOU know we adopted Boots one month ago yesterday. I love him so much! Ever though yesterday when I was playing with him he tried to pierce my nose for free. Shelter dogs are the best dogs! I'd take every one if I could!

Thank you Hillside for your wonderful work. I am originally from Mt. Carmel and am now living in Wilmington De. I adopted a mix breed dog "Meka" from the Delaware Humane in Dec of 1999(our no-kill shelter)They were terrific about matching us up. Meka is wonderful and has filled my life with such joy. I wish everyone could have the joy of adopting a shelter dog and cat and having this happiness. I found your site because a relative was considering "buying" a purebred dog. I sent him to Hillside and pray that he adopts one of your dogs. God Bless you all. I will be sure to stop in the next time I am "up home." Ginny Kufta
